Engineers at Russia's state-possessed Gazprom say they turned off Nord Stream 1 for specialized reasons, with Moscow faulting sanctions for limiting genuinely necessary parts. European pioneers, however, question this. It is the second time this late spring that Russia has switched off the 1,200km long (745 mile) gas pipeline. The connection runs from Russia, under the Baltic Sea, into a dispersion station in north-eastern Germany. Indeed, even before Wednesday, the pipeline was conveying less gas than expected - running at only 20% of limit.
